About this resource
This quiz focuses on the fundamental physics concepts of accuracy and precision in scientific measurement, appropriate for grades 10-12. The questions assess students' understanding of the distinction between accuracy (how close measurements are to the true or accepted value) and precision (how close repeated measurements are to each other). Students need to grasp that these are independent concepts - measurements can be accurate but not precise, precise but not accurate, both, or neither. The quiz also introduces significant figures and measurement uncertainty, requiring students to identify estimated digits in recorded measurements. To successfully complete this assessment, students must interpret bullseye diagrams as visual representations of accuracy and precision combinations, analyze data sets to determine their accuracy and precision characteristics, and understand that the number of decimal places in a measurement indicates its precision level. Created by Cynthia Lee, a Physics teacher in the US who teaches grades 10 and 12. This quiz serves as an excellent formative assessment tool for introducing measurement concepts at the beginning of a physics course or chemistry unit involving laboratory work. Teachers can use it as a warm-up activity before hands-on measurement labs, as homework to reinforce classroom instruction, or as a quick review before more complex error analysis topics. The quiz effectively prepares students for laboratory experiences where they will collect and analyze data, make multiple trials of measurements, and evaluate experimental results. This assessment aligns with Next Generation Science Standards practices for analyzing and interpreting data (SP4) and supports Common Core mathematical practices in precision and accuracy (MP6), while addressing specific physics standards related to measurement and data analysis found in most state science frameworks.
