Hemodialysis tasks for VAN RN's

What is the correct technique for accessing a hemodialysis catheter?

• Mask is worn by patient and RN. Soak ends with alcohol saturated 4x4 gauze. "Scrub the hubs" with large alcohol pads x 15 seconds.

• Mask is worn by RN only. "Scrub the hubs" using site scrubs x 10 seconds.

• Mask is worn by Patient only. Soak ends with alcohol saturated 4x4 gauze. No need to "scrub the hub".

• Masks are no necessary. "Scrub the hubs" with site scrubs x 10 seconds.

How often do tunneled dialysis catheter dressing (gauze dressing) need to be changed?

• 3 x week with dialysis; MWF or TTS is dialysis is on hold

• dressing is soiled

• dressing is non-occlusive

• all of the above
