Read the following Paragraph (The whole text is one paragraph): How is the evidence introduced?
Harrison Bergeron illustrates through Hazel the theme that television is a tool that can be used to distract the public. On page four of the story Vonnegut writes:
George came back in with the beer, paused while a handicap signal shook him up. And then he sat down again. "You been crying" he said to Hazel. "Yup, " she said. "What about?" he said. "I forget," she said. "Something real sad on television." "What was it?" he said. "It's all kind of mixed up in my mind," said Hazel. "Forget sad things," said George. “I always do,” said Hazel. (Vonnegut 4)
This story takes place in a futuristic society where everyone is equal, and those who are above average are never celebrated but, instead, forced to lower themselves to the level of their peers using handicaps. Harrison is born above average in every way, and, because he refuses to use handicaps, he is imprisoned. His mother however, can’t seem to remember that she even had a son let alone grieve his absence. She spends her days watching television in the living room showing the true consequences of their TV addictions as it occurs after Harrison is shot down
