What is a Summary?

A summary uses sentences which are -

• Paraphrased (written in your own words)

• Copied from the text

A good summary should-

• Include several minor details from the text

• Include many details from the beginning and end, but few from the middle

• Include the main idea from the beginning, middle, and end

• Be really long

All of the following questions can be used to write a nonfiction summary EXCEPT-

• What are the most important ideas that the author wants me to learn about the topic?

• Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

• What are the important parts of the plot?

• What did each section teach me about the topic?

What can the reader use to help determine the most important ideas?

• The title

• Subheadings

• Photographs/Visuals

When selecting the best summary on a test, the reader should probably-

• Guess- those answers are always too long!

• Pick the longest answer choice

• Pick the answer with details from the beginning, middle, & end (by checking back in the passage)

• Pick the answer choice with the longest, fanciest words

How can subheadings help the reader summarize?
