Why was Nixon want detente?

• He wanted to get out of Vietnam and to manipulate the USSR by being friends with PRC

Why did the USSR want detente

• The USSR was spending 30 % of her Gross Domestic Product on defence whereas the USA was spending 13%

• The Vietnam war was showing the USA could be beaten and she might welcome less tension

• The USSR was producing as much Iron, Steel and oil as the USA but was falling behind with new technologies like computers. If their relations were friendlier then the USA might share her technology.

• Khrushchev couldn't swim, was humiliated by Mao (who could swim like a fish) so the USSR was falling out with her Communist ally
