MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

Keeping dogs

There are many reasons for keeping dogs as pets in the city area, but many people feel that keeping pet dogs should not be allowed in the city. Dogs are often not taken care properly. They are kept in small backyards and rarely taken for walks. They are left in the yard all day by themselves while the family is at work. Very little attention is given to the dog and it is not a very good life for it. It is no wonder why these dogs bark and disturb the neighbours and become a nuisance to the community.

On the other hand, not all people treat their dogs this way and why should the people receive a lot of pleasure and enjoyment from dog's suffer? Dogs can make a lonely person's life happy or make wonderful playmate. It can also teach a child responsibility as they not only get to lay with the dog, but also need to exercise, feed, and care for the dog.

I feel that we should be allowed to keep dogs in the city, because if it is taken care of properly, dogs can be a great source of pleasure. As a child I used to enjoy playing and taking care of my pet. There is not greater loyalty a person can get than from a well-cared dog.

Some people do not like the presence of pet dogs in their surroundings because ....

the dogs are left in the yards

the dogs guard the security of the environment

the dogs often bark and disturb the neighbours

the dogs are often neglected

OPEN LETTER TO THE PRIME MINISTER

The Hon RJ Hawke, MP

Prime minister

Parliament House

CANBERRA ACT 2600

Dear Prime Minister

Into the Mouth of Babes

We are writing to you because we are concerned about the way food is being advertised to children.

What we eat now affects our health in years to come. Bad dietary habits start while we are very young. For this reason, your government supports health education that encourages a balanced healthy diet. Australians are encouraged to get the bulk of their nutrients from fresh fruit, vegetables, and wholegrain cereals, a lesser amount from foods high in fat, salt and sugar.

TV advertising to children presents a completely different message. Nearly 80% of food advertising pushes fatty snacks or sweets – the very food that should be eaten least. To make matter worse, these ads take up much of the advertising time. This must be stopped.

TV advertising is powerful and influential. Parents, however strong will, find it hard to resist pressures created by this advertising. Children are least able to understand the tricks of the advertising industry.

For the hours when children are the main audience, TV advertising of foods must be made to reinforce, not undermine, the message about a balanced diet. We appeal to you, as Prime Minister, to take the lead in calling together the advertisers, TV networks, consumers and public health bodies to decide how this is to be done.

Yours sincerely,

Signed by Barbara Biggins and other prominent signatories.

Based on the text, we can conclude that ...

the writers very much disagree with TV advertising

TV advertising supports government programs

the priority target of TV advertising is the parents

TV advertising helps the writers in promoting healthy diet

One small reason why we should all learn to choose wood

One of the biggest threats to our children’s future is climate change caused by global warming.

There’s no single, simple solution, but we’d like to tell you about the good wood can do and why all of us should, wherever possible, be using it.

Trees suck in carbon dioxide out of the air and lock it away, so forestry is a vital part of any strategy to slow global warming. When we use the wood, the carbon stays locked up and the replanted trees start the cycle again.

And, despite what you might believe, Europe’s stock of trees is actually growing, as we currently plant more than two trees for every one that we cut.

Not only is wood renewable, but it takes less energy to fell, transport and process than other building materials. And, because it’s a natural insulator, timber frame houses use less fuel to heat.

So, next time when you need a new floor, replacement windows, a patio or a new kitchen, stop for just a moment and remember all those little reasons for choosing wood.
