Domino Theory

• The belief that if on nation in Asia fell to the Communists, neighboring countries would follow them.

• The idea that if Vietnam fell to communism, the rest of Southeast Asia would follow, like a line of domino falling over.

• The belief that once Asia became communist that all other countries would be inclined to follow.

• If Indochina became communist Europe would follow and the World would be divided between communism and democracy.

Guerrilla

• They are irregular troops who blend into civilian population and are difficult for regular armies to fight. Member of an armed band that carries out surprise attacks and sabotage rather than open warfare.

• They are NOT irregular troops who blend.

• Underground political supportive agents.

• Soldiers fighting to keep the peace during war times.

Napalm

• A jellied gasoline used for bombs.

• American planes dropped napalms a jellied gasoline that explodes on contact.

• Jellied gasoline used to developed controlled fires in areas where fire was needed for clear cutting.

• Jellied gasoline used as clean fuel.

Agent Orange

• A chemical defoliant used to clear Vietnamese jungles during the Vietnam War. A chemical that strips the leaves off of trees and shrubs, and causes deformities.

• A chemical that does not poison people or the ground.

• A strong cleaning agent that was used to clean wounds of the injured.

• A disinfectant used to sterilize people.

Credibility Gap

• Lack of trust or believability.

• Their was a difference between what Americans viewed on the television and what the Johnson administration said about the war. It was the first television war.

• The difference between the story told and the story heard.

• The belief of what is true and the reports of false news.

Teach-in

• In March 1965, a group of faculty members and students at the University of Michigan joined together in a teach-in. An extended meeting or class held to discuss a social or political issue.

• An extended meeting or class held to discuss a social or political news.

• A meeting held to promote the public good in times of war.

• A meeting that discusses the issues of political power.

Doves

• The United States became divided into two camps Doves and the Hawks, the doves wanted the US to leave Vietnam. A person in favor of the US withdrawing from Vietnam War.

• A person that does not favor of the US withdrawing from Vietnam War.

Hawks

• The Hawks wanted the troops to stay in Vietnam War, and win. Those who believed the US should continue its military efforts in Vietnam War.

• Those who believed the US should NOT continue its military efforts in Vietnam War.

Linkage

• Kissinger embarked upon a policy called linkage, or improving relations with the Soviet Union and China, to try to persuade them to reduce their aid to North Vietnam. A strategy to gain power through influence and persuasion.

• A strategy to over through power by conspiracy, influence and persuasion.

Vietnamization

• The remaining of US Troops while the S. Vietnamese assumed more of the fighting.

• Also called the "Nixon Doctrine". As applied to Vietnam, it was labeled "Vietnamization". A strategy by President Richard Nixon for ending U.S involvement in the Vietnam War.The withdrawal of US Troops while the S. Vietnamese assumed more of the fighting.
