Muslim Festivals & Special Days

Id-ul-Adha is:

• the Festival of lights

• the festival of sacrifice

• the festival of midsummer

• the festival at the end of Ramadan

Id-ul-Adha remembers

• the time when Allah provided a lamb for Ibrahim to sacrifice instead of his son, Isma'il

• the time when Isma'il made water come out of the ground by banging his heel on it

• the time when the angel Jibril appeared to Muhammad

• the time when Muhammad made the first hajj

The major Muslim festival is

• Id-ul-Ghadeer

• Id-ul-Fitr

• Id-ul-Adha

• Ashura

When a lamb is chose for slaughtering in advance of Id-ul-Adha, the following words are said in Arabic:

• 'in the name of God, God is the greatest'

• 'thank you Allah for giving us this lamb'

• 'in memory of Ibrahim and Allah's merciful rescue'

• 'Peace be upon us'

A khutbah is:

• the black box at the centre of Makkah

• a special knife used for sacrificing animals

• a sermon delivered by the imam

• a sequence of prayers

The id prayers can be held in an open air gathering place called a:

• Musalla

• Meralla

• Muballa

• Medolla

During Id-ul-Adha, after the prayers, Muslims greet each other saying:

• Id Mubarak - which means happy holiday

• Id Salam - which means peaceful holidays

• Id Allah - which means holy holidays

• Id Khutbah - which means have a great time

During Id-ul-Adha, once the animal has been sacrificed, the meat is divided into 3 portions. The first is kept by the family, the others are given to:

• the mosque

• friends, relatives and the poor

• your employer

• the local government representative

Which of these is NOT a reason why Id-ul-Adha is important to Muslims

• It shows Muslims' willingness to make sacrifices for Allah

• It is an opportunity to be thankful to Allah for his provision

• It helps develop a sense of 'ummah' (community) & to show support for those completing their sacrifice on hajj near Makkah
