What is the origin of the name "Cosumnes?"

In historic times, tuberculosis (commonly known as "consumption") plagued the area. At the time it was thought that the river transmitted the disease.

The native America Miwok tribe inhabited this area. The Miwok work "kosum" refers to the salmon that spawned in the river, and "-umne" means "people of"

It is named after the confluence of the American River and the Sacramento River. The "Co-" refers to the joining of the two rivers.
