The setting of a story includes both the time and the place. Time: This doesn't just mean what time the clock says, or the date on the calendar. Robby didn't his uncle's stories. Uncle Chris talked too loud and too long. Talking with the confidence of a lion stalking its prey, it never occurred to Chris that Robby might grow tired of the same stories repeated many times.

Ben peered into the mysterious box. His heart began to beat faster, and he took a couple of slow, deep breaths to help calm it. Who would send him such a gift? Why hadn't they included a card?

In order to make a story more interesting, authors often include details that appeal to your senses (sight, sound, taste, smell, touch). These are called SENSORY DETAILS. Sensory details help you imagine being there. You picture it in your mind, or imagine the sounds and smells.
