Making a guess without evidence

Information written directly into the text.

There is a child sleeping upstairs quietly, when all of a sudden there is a loud "THUMP!" One can infer that:

The child continued to sleep calmly

The child was eating a bag of chips

To make an inference you take what you know, and what the author tells you to….

come up with something the author doesn't tell you.

not think about the story at all.

Bringing together: what is written in the text [evidence/quotes]

What is already known by you as the reader

Inferring helps you to predict what will happen

Using your prior knowledge (from your own life; what you know about the world; from other texts you have read) to help come up with an idea about what might come next in the text

What is Asking Questions ?

Asking questions of the text before you read, during reading, and/or after reading

What do you do when you come to an unfamiliar word?

Use your context clues to read around the word and think of what would make sense based on what is happening in the text. Use a dictionary to check if you are not sure at all.

Immediately ask for a dictionary and look it up.

Skip past the word and don't go back to figure out the meaning.

Stop reading completely and stare at the word until you know it.

When you come across a word you don't know, you should...

use the context clues in the text to help you figure out what the word means

just keep reading and not worry about what the word means

skip over the word and forget about it
