The Caddos

Caddos: Primarily Region they lived:

• Lived on The Great Plains which stretch from Canada into southern

  Texas.

• Lived along the Texas coast.

• Lived in villages along the Rio Grande.

• Moved into eastern Texas from present day

  Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma more than

  1,000 years ago.

Caddos: How did they live?

• They were nomads, or people who moved from

  place to place.

• In total, almost 10,000 people lived in the five villages north of Big Bend.

• They were politically organized into three confederacies, or

  loose associations that worked together.

Caddos: What was their food?

• hunted buffalo on the plains.

• The men cleared the fields and made tools. The women

  worked in the fields, gathered plants, cooked, and

  cleaned. They were farmers.

• fished, hunted sea turtles, and collected shellfish.

  They also gathered eggs and hunted deer and small

  animals.

• they grew corn and other crops by planting

  near the river.

Caddos : What was their shelter?

• They built

  houses out of adobe bricks,

• They lived in tall, grass-covered houses in large settlements

• They were nomads,

• Most lived in tepees, portable houses

  made from animal houses stretched on poles.

• dugout canoes and exceptionally fine long boes.
