College Vocabulary

ACT/SAT Test

• standardized test you take in high school that you submit with your college application

• the main course of studies in college

• financial aid that you do NOT have to pay back

• the highest degree offered by a university

Dorm/Residence Hall

• the dining hall where you eat on campus

• your college advisory who helps you select your courses

• a financial award given for good grades

• a room or apartment on campus that you usually share with other other students

College

• a certificate offered by a community college

• a school that you attend after high school; will offer you courses to prepare you for more career choices in life.

• outside of school activity such as student council

• a unit that shows the value of an academic class

Community College

• a certificate for someone who completes four years of college

• a college where anyone can attend for free, without an application

• A two year college that offers associate's degrees

• a room or apartment on campus where you live with other students

Degree

• a certificate or diploma given by a community college, college or university

• the process of getting into a college

• the FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid

• the TSI test to prepare you for Early College

TSI

• a disease you get from others coughing near you

• the amount of money a student has to pay for her classes

• a student working on their first degree

• Texas Success Initiative - standardized test that can admit you to community college (including ACC Early College)

Financial Aid

• A standardized test you take to be admitted to college

• Early College

• Money awarded to a student to pay for college, student must complete their FAFSA

• can only be awarded to wealthy families applying to college

Master's Degree

• this qualifies you to be a medical doctor

• the degree earned after studying 2 more years AFTER you have completed a bachelor's degree

• degree offered by community colleges all over the US

• can be earned during Early College in high school

Doctorate Degree

• can be earned at a community college

• degree someone would need in order to become an electrician

• degree that requires you to become a medical doctor after you graduate

• highest level of degree one can earn; usually takes 3-4 more years of study after completing a bachelor's degree

Transcript

• an official document showing a list of student classes and final grades for 9-12 grade (and some 8th grade if it was a high school credit)

• a report card showing your most recent grades (only 11-12)
