The designer of old cars didn’t consider a seat belt as an important part. Besides, the drivers wearing the seat belt will think that they are completely safe, so they may drive carelessly. They are safe, indeed, but how about safety of others?

Animals and marine creatures consume plastic particles along with their food. Plastic cannot be digested and thus gets trapped in their intestines. Large amount of plastic is accumulated in the intestines of various animals and sea creatures and results in serious health problems in them. Sometimes, animals gulp the entire plastic bag by mistake. This gets stuck in their throat or intestines and chokes them to death. Sea turtles are especially known to have the entire plastic bag in one go mistaking it for jelly fish. Research shows that waste plastic bags have been a major cause of untimely animal deaths.

Waste plastic bags often run down with water or are blown by the wind and get trapped in the drains and sewers. Clogged sewers and drains can be a threat to the human beings as well as animals especially during rains. The water gets accumulated as the drains are blocked because of plastic bags. This can result in flood like situation and disrupt the normal life of people.

Most people choose to burn their garbage in open areas than recycling them. I suppose they don’t realize how harmful this practice is to their health and to the environment. There are some reasons why we should not burn waste.

Open burning of garbage poses health risks to those exposed directly to the smoke. It especially affects people with sensitive respiratory systems, as well as children and the elderly. In the short term, exposure to smoke can cause headaches, nausea, and rashes. Over time, it can increase the risk of developing heart disease.

Since open burning of garbage is more common in rural and agricultural areas, there is particular concern for high levels of dioxins and furans setting on crops, in our streams, and in our lakes. Dioxins and furans produced by the open burning of garbage area are deposited on plants, which are eaten by animals. The dioxins and furans are absorbed by these animals and stay in the food chain until they ultimately end up in our meat and dairy products. In fact, over 90% of our intake of dioxins and furans is from our diet.

In conclusion, burning garbage is not a good way to reduce our waste because it is dangerous for our health and environment. There are still many safe ways to reduce waste that we can try.
