About this resource

This quiz focuses on decimal place value, rounding, and operations for fifth-grade mathematics. Students work with decimals to the thousandths place, identifying place values of specific digits in numbers like 0.735 and 9.283. The assessment evaluates their ability to round decimals to specified place values and perform addition and subtraction with decimals, including money problems that require borrowing and regrouping across place values. Students must demonstrate understanding of the base-ten number system as it extends beyond whole numbers, recognize the relationship between place value positions (where each position represents ten times the value of the position to its right), and apply rounding rules consistently. The quiz also includes conceptual questions about the decimal system, such as understanding that dividing one hundredth into ten equal parts creates thousandths, reinforcing the multiplicative structure of our number system. Created by Pao Xiong, a Mathematics teacher in the US who teaches grade 5. This assessment serves as an excellent chapter review tool that can be implemented as homework to reinforce recently taught concepts, used as a warm-up activity to activate prior knowledge before introducing new decimal topics, or administered as formative assessment to gauge student understanding before summative evaluation. The quiz structure allows teachers to quickly identify which students have mastered place value concepts versus those who need additional support with rounding procedures or decimal operations. Teachers can use student performance data to create targeted intervention groups or to spiral review specific concepts in upcoming lessons. This assessment aligns with Common Core standards 5.NBT.1 (recognizing place value patterns in decimals), 5.NBT.4 (rounding decimals to any place), and 5.NBT.7 (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals to hundredths).
