• the parties were thrown in the hope that Daisy would come, now that they were together he didn't need them anymore

• Gatsby ran out of money and was in danger of losing the house

• after Tom ruined his party Gatsby didn't want to have anymore in fear of him coming back

• Gatsby realized he could never compete with Tom, and became very depressed
