What is a fief?

• A peasant that works the land on a manor

• A grant of land given to a knight by a Lord

• A loyal follower

• A form of chocolate cake

What were Charlemagne's main goals?

• Build schools, gain power over Europe and spread Christianity

• Establish feudalism in Europe

• Conquer land to stop the Viking invasions

• Bring back the old Roman Empire

Why did Europeans turn to feudalism?

• To help out the king and pay his taxes

• They wanted to have a new way of living on a manor

• A self sufficient estate where peasants work and live
