Here Come the Cranes
About half a million sandhill cranes cover the sky. Every March, these large birds come to the Platte River in Nebraska. The river is an important stop on the birds’ trip north. For about six weeks, the cranes rest and eat there. Then, as the spring breezes turn warm, the birds leave. They head for the far north. The cranes’ mating season begins there.
