1. What is Lyra’s impression of Mrs. Coulter?

• Lyra looked at Mrs. Coulter and felt disrespect for her as she was a female scholar. She regarded her as someone who was of no special interest.

• She instantly knew who she was and became very excited at meeting the famous Mrs. Coulter. She began to talk quickly about her life.

• Although she was a female scholar, she was not like any scholar she had seen before. Lyra was fascinated about how she dressed and her presence in the dining room.

• Mrs. Coulter took little interest in Lyra, even though they sat next to each other at dinner. They barely had any conversation throughout the meal.

• The Master proposes that Lyra will remain at the College but Lyra refuses and wants to leave with Mrs. Coulter.

• The Master proposes that Lyra will leave Jordan College and must now make her own way in the world as she has learnt everything she can. Lyra is upset and refuses to go.

• Mrs. Coulter was strict with Lyra, making sure she turned her light out before bed and telling her what to wear and who to talk to.

• Mrs. Coulter treated Lyra with little interest as she was always so busy making plans to go to the North.

• Mrs. Coulter often lied to Lyra, by telling her that she would take her and meet explorers at The Royal Arctic Institute but then, never did.
