A long time ago, there was an orchard owned by a rich couple and filed with the most delicious tamarind trees. One day, a fairy decided to test the couple’s generosity. She came to the orchard dressed as a poor old woman and begged for the couple to give her a few fruits since she was very hungry. The selfish couple left their dogs loose on her.

The old woman was bitten by the dogs and badly injured. She touched the giant tamarind tree and cursed, “Your greed shall be punished”, as the woman walked away, the sky darkened and a ferocious storm broke out. Then the rain poured down and continued until late at night.

The next morning, the sky was clear and blue. The couple came to tend their orchard and they were bewildered to find their entire orchard gone. Instead, there was water everywhere. When they looked down into the water, they could still see their precious tree at the bottom of the lake. People call the lake “Sampaloc Lake” which means Tamarind Lake in English.

When the crocodile heard this, he became very angry. He wanted to show the rabbit that he could roar. And so, the crocodile opened his mouth to roar. When the crocodile opened his mouth, the clever rabbit jumped free. As he jumped, the rabbit’s sharp toe-nails caught the crocodile’s tongue and tore it out.

The crocodile tried to catch the rabbit again, but his great teeth only snapped off the end of the rabbit’s tail. That is why rabbit today have short tail, and crocodiles have no tongue.

"If i am not mistaken, people call it “Singa”, your majesty," one of his bodyguards replied. "What?" Asked the King to clarify. “Singa” replied the guard.

The king then asked more explanation about the animal. Attentively, The King listened to all explanations from his bodyguard about the animal. "Then, we give the name of this place “Singapore”.”Meaning: The City of Lion which is derived from malay “Singa” (lion) and “Pura / Pore” (City)". Since that time the town was named Singapore.
