Desert Masters

The desert is a harsh place to live. It does not rain very often, and there are not many plants. The Sun beats down upon the sand, which reflects its rays, making it even hotter and brighter. It is very difficult for plants, animals, and humans to survive. However, there is one animal perfectly suited to living in the desert. It is the camel.

Camels have many special features that help them to survive in the desert. Their hump is the most obvious. Most camels have one hump, but there are some camels that have two. The humps do not store water. They store fat, which the camel uses for energy. Their hooves are very wide, which allows them to walk on top of the sand rather than sink into it. Camels have very long eyelashes, which help keep the sand out of their eyes. They also have special flaps in their noses which keep the sand out, and their ears have a lot of hair inside them that helps keep the sand out too.

Getting enough food and water in the desert can be hard, but camels survive just fine. Camels eat desert grasses, thorns, leaves, or salty plants, but they can go for weeks without eating. When they need energy, camels use the fat that is stored in their humps. Camels can go for a week or more without water. However, when they eventually get a drink, camels can drink up to 32 gallons of water!

Camels have a very unique appearance. Most people can recognize camels because of their humps. They have very long legs, which keep them far from the hot ground. Camels also have an unusual walk. When a camel walks, both legs on one side move at the same time. Giraffes have this same walk, but most other animals do not. Camels have a special kind of fur that actually helps to keep it cool. Their short, stubby fur is colored brown to match the sand in their environment.

Lastly, camels get up from the ground in an unusual way too. When camels are resting, they lie on the ground with all four feet tucked beneath them. To stand, camels first get up on their front knees. Next, they stand completely up on their back legs while still kneeling on their front legs. Finally, they stand up all the way on their legs.
