Past simple vs Past Perfect

We use both past simple and past perfect to talk about situations in the past

I got home, my dad prepared me some food.

When I got home, my dad had prepared the food already.

• You got home and your dad wasn't preparing food

• You got home and your dad only then prepared food

We use past perfect to talk about a situation that happened before a mentioned situation.

eg: "The moment I arrived, she had already left"

We use the simple past to talk about a situation that happened in a particular moment in the past and has no relation with the present.

eg: "I ate a bar of chocolate yesterday"

We use Past Perfect for an action which happened before another past action or before a stated time in the past.
