Physical: To support how scholars are perceived/ see themselves...

• Promote body positive through positive self-image.

• Promote whole health (mind, body, and heart) as a site.

• Promote non materialistic and non aesthetic recognition site wide.

• Host parent engagement events to promote family health.

Speech/ Language: To support how scholars communicate...

• Provide multiple opportunities to express their opinions with others.

• Encourage group projects & collaboration w/ equity of voice/presence.

• When they talk about their relationships, provide a listening ear (encourage healthy, non-abusive interactions/ communication).

• Provide space for them to practice communicating in various settings (school/work/family/friends).

Social: To support how scholars may interact...

• Engage in discussions on components of loving and healthy relationships with family, friends, partners, mentors, coworkers, and others.

• Avoid embarrassing scholars via public reprimand or singling out.

• Promote self-advocacy for emotional, mental, and physical well-being through cooperation contract.

• Develop a shared method for taking "space" and giving "space" (could be a hand signal followed by a defined period of time where the scholar can have a moment to themselves).

Moral: To support how scholars may demonstrate and receive respect...

• Co-construct classrooms expectations (cooperative contract/procedures/routines).

• Provide space for everyone to be imperfect, while holding each other accountable to the CDF Freedom Schools Way.

• Provide space to discuss real life issues and brainstorm conflict resolutions and social actions.

• Provide space to critically thinking about the ethics of life (Right vs. Wrong) and avoid forcing them into a narrow perspective.

Psycho-Emotional: To support how scholars might "feel" or present themselves...

• Provide space to discuss issues as they arise, being mindful of mutual respect for all.

• Avoid name calling or singling out socially less favored emotional traits (Cry baby, extra, over the top, doing too much, goody two shoes, know it all).

• Provide space to discuss how different experiences and interactions impact them.

• Provide space for them to debrief by expressing successes, challenges, and resolutions.

Cognitive Intellectual: To support how scholars might make sense of or critique the world...

• Provide space for them to critically analyze present, past, and future moral, social, and ethical issues.

• Provide space for them to determine how to use their knowledge and skills to promote change in their community.

• Ask open-ended probing questions without a definitive "right" or "wrong" answer.

• Promote space for scholars to push one another's thinking and spar with ideas not each other. (I disagree with what Jay said instead of I disagree with Jay.)
