An organized way of gathering and analyzing evidence about the natural world.

A logical, systematic approach to the solution of a scientific problem consisting of systematic observations, measurements, experiments, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses.

The experimental factor that the scientist manipulates or changes; the variable whose effect is being studied.

The outcome factor; the variable that may change in response to manipulations of the independent variable.

Part of the experiment that does not receive the independent variable; used for comparison

Part of the experiment that remains the same for every part of the experiment

data that is descriptive in nature; can be observed but not measured, e.g., smell, tall

data that is numerical in nature & can be objectively measured using numbers, e.g., volume, temperature, mass

A thoroughly tested explanation of why things happen as they do; an explanation of why experiments give certain results.

A concise statement that summarizes the results of a broad spectrum of observations and experiments; predicts what will happen under certain conditions.
