Tone & Intonation

In music, TONE is:

• The quality of the sound

• How loud or soft you play

• How close you are to the correct pitch

INTONATION is the same as:

• How accurate your rhythms are

• How in tune you are

• How loud you are playing

If the tuner indicates that you're FLAT, you should:

• Push in to tune your instrument

• Pull out to tune your instrument

When taking a breath before blowing into your instrument, you should:

• Breathe through your mouth quickly

• Breathe through your nose slowly

When breathing to play your instrument, you should:

• Raise your shoulders as you're breathing in

• Take in small amounts of air very frequently

• Take a deep breath by expanding your lower chest/ stomach area.

When blowing into your instrument, you should:

• Stop and start your airflow/pressure for each note

• Keep your airflow/pressure constant and use your tongue to turn the air on or off

When you breathe at a BREATH MARK, you should:

• Breathe in quickly through your mouth for less than a beat

• Breathe in through your mouth for as long as you need
