The Marches and the Laurence’s were neighbours. One afternoon, Jo visited Laurie when he said he had a bad cold and requested her for company. Jo arrived carrying gifts sent by her family. Meg had sent some blancmange for Laurie as he would not be able to swallow anything that hurt his throat. Beth had sent three kittens to cheer Laurie up as he was sad and lonely.
