There is a famous bird called the bird of paradise. In Indonesia it is known by the name of cedrawasih. Its scientific name is Paradisaeidae. It can be found in the eastern part of Indonesia, Papua, Papua New Guinea, the Torres Strait Islands and eastern Australia. A lot of people only know that birds of paradise are brown, golden, yellow, and red, but actually birds of paradise have 30-48 different types with different colors and shapes.
This bird is nicknamed the birds of paradise because according to the myth this bird is considered a bird that
hovers in heaven, This beautifully feathered bird of paradise is usually a male. The beautiful fur is a beautiful outfit to attract the attention of females during the mating season. Apart from showing off the beauty of their fur, male cenderawasih also performs dynamic and beautiful movements or dances to grab the attention of females. Each type of cenderawasih has different types of dances and attractions.
However, it is very unfortunate because of its beautiful feathers, this bird is threatened with extinction due to hunting and illegal traficking, WWF Papua data shows that in the 1900-1930s, sales of cenderawasih reached 10,000-30,000 head per year. In 1912, for example, sales reached 30,000 in one ship shipment to Germany and England for fashion needs. in 2012 in Papua there is one location of Cenderawasih habitat. It is known that in every one square kilometer, there are only 2-3 birds of paradise found even though in 2000-2005 there were 10-15 in nature. In 2018 and 2019, efforts were made to increase the Cendrawasih population by 10 percent.
It is hoped that this bird will not become extinct in the future so that the mascot or logo of Papua can continue to be enjoyed by our children and grandchildren.
