Theme

Exposition

• Agriculutaral Fair held in the fall in Western Massachusetts

• A narrative device, often used at the beginning of a work that provides necessary background information about the characters and their circumstances.

Rising Action

• A series of events that builds from the conflict. It begins with the inciting force and ends with the climax

• Introduction of the plot and theme in a story

Climax

• the furthest most point on a mountain; often referred to as the peak

• the most intense, exciting, or important point of something; a culmination or apex.

falling action

• the part of a literary plot that occurs after the climax has been reached and the conflict has been resolved

• when the antagonist is removed from the story and the antagonist succeeds

Resolution

• the part of the story when the protagonist and the antagonist resolve to try to get along

• End of the story where loose ends are tied up

Conflict

• A struggle between two opposing forces

• the negative elements in a work of literature

Irony

• the realization that the plot of a literary work is not capturing your interest

• A contrast between expectation and reality

Characterization

• A method an author uses to let readers know more about the characters and their personal traits.

• tactic used by authors to sway their readers mind

INdirect characterization

• when a character does not say what they really mean

• the process by which the personality of a fictitious character is revealed through the character's speech, actions, appearance, etc.
