I am an English sailor who sailed for 3 different companies who wanted to claim land in the new world and find the Northwest Passage. I didn't find it, but I claimed land in New York, named waterways after myself, and claimed land for the rulers in Holland. Who am I?

With the support of the Spanish monarchs, I sailed west to find a new route to Asia.
