In this chapter we see Bilbo and the Dwarves as they all proceed down the tunnel to Smaug's lair. Compare the differences in attitude between Bilbo and the Dwarves.

• BIlbo's been down there twice already and is not afraid now. He is willing to provide leadership and risk his life for the Quest. The Dwarves in contrast are terrified, wish to take no risks, and only go because they are desperate.

• Bilbo is surprisingly terrified to go back down and meet Smaug again. The Dwarves call him a coward and force Bilbo down the tunnel.

• Everbody is equally terrified and are blaming one another for what they believe will be their imminent death by the dragon.

• None of these is correct.
