What is direct characterization?

• The process by which the personality of a character is revealed through the character's speech, actions, appearance, etc.

• The process by which the narrator tells the audience what the personality of the character is.

What is indirect characterization?

• The process by which the narrator tells the audience what the personality of the character is.

• The process by which the personality of a character is revealed through the character's speech, actions, appearance, etc.

In indirect characterization....

• the writer describes the character

• the character's personality is directly described by the author

• the writer reveals the character's traits through STEAL

What does STEAL stand for?

• Speech, Thoughts, Effect on others, Actions, and Looks
