Early people were nomadic hunters following herds of animals, migrating from Asia to North America 35,000 years ago. Then in 100 B.C. they learned to farm and began settling in more complex societies.

Texas survived as an independent nation led by Sam Houston and Mirabeau B. Lamar. These Presidents of Texas had to deal with debt issues, Native Americans, and their delayed annexation into the United States. After nearly 10 years, Texas was finally annexed by U.S. President James K. Polk as the 28th state.

Texans fought for their independence from Mexico, following Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston. Vastly outnumbered, the Texans suffered defeats at the Alamo and in the Goliad Massacre, but later managed to defeat the Mexican army at San Jacinto, capturing Santa Anna and securing their independence from Mexico.

After many years of struggle, Mexico won its independence from Spain. Their first goal was to populate Texas with loyal settlers, but there weren’t many in Mexico willing to move there. So, the Mexican government allowed empresarios to bring Anglo settlers from the U.S. to live in Texas. when did this take place?

Spanish and French explorers came to this area in search of gold, to spread their belief in God, or to achieve glory for themselves. Pineda mapped the coast line and claimed it for Spain, Cabeza de Vaca was shipwrecked and survived, and La Salle established a failed French colony.

Spain built dozens of missions and presidios in Texas, hoping to convert the local Native Americans to the Spanish religion and culture. Their plan failed when most of the natives rejected the religion and culture of Spain.
