How does the king move?

• any amount of spaces horizontally and vertically

• exactly one space horizontally, vertically, or diagonally

• only vertically

• any number of vacant squares

How does the queen move?

• exactly one square horizontally, vertically, or diagonally

• any number of vacant squares vertically or horizontally

• any number of vacant squares in any diagonal direction

• any number of vacant squares diagonally, horizontally, or vertically

How can a rook move?

• any number of vacant squares diagonally, horizontally, or vertically

• exactly one square horizontally, vertically, or diagonally

• any number of vacant squares vertically or horizontally

• one square along any rank or file and then at an angle

How can the bishop move?

• any number of vacant squares diagonally, horizontally, or vertically

• forward one square, if that square is unoccupied

• one square along any rank or file and then at an angle

• any number of vacant squares in any diagonal direction

How can the knight move?

• forward one square, if that square is unoccupied

• one square along any rank or file and then at an angle; viewed as an “L”

• one square horizontally, vertically, or diagonally

• any number of vacant squares vertically or horizontally

How can a pawn move?

• any number of vacant squares vertically or horizontally

• forward one square, if that square is unoccupied; two squares on first move only

• exactly one square horizontally, vertically, or diagonally

• ne square along any rank or file and then at an angle

When can a king move two squares horizontally?

• During castling

• When another piece is pinned

• When the king is in check

• After white has made a move

Which is the only piece that captures differently than it moves?

• king

• knight

What criteria must be satisfied for castling to be allowed to take place?

• Neither king nor rook involved in castling may have moved from the original position

• There must be no pieces between the king and the rook

• The king may not currently be in check

• The king is not allowed to pass through or end up in a square that is under attack by an enemy piece

What criteria define "en passant?"

• may only occur when a pawn is moved two squares on its initial movement

• the opposing player has the option to take the moved pawn “en passant” as if it had only moved one square

• can happen anytime the pawn moves throughout the game

• allows the pawn to take any opposing piece directly in front of it.
