Welding Safety - Oxygen Acetylene (Gas) Section 1

Before using the welding equipment, you must obtain permission from the

• custodian
• instructor
• no one
• another student

Anyone welding, brazing, or watching the flame must:

• squint

• wear orange lenses

• wear welding goggles or welding face shield with Shade 5 lense

• wear an arc welding helmet

The "working" pressure on the acetylene hose should not exceed:

• 5 P.S.I.

• 10 P.S.I.

• 15 P.S.I.

• 20 P.S.I.

You should check connections for leaks on welding equipment with:

• a match
• soap suds
• your ear
• your hand

Cylinders should be set so that they are:

• upright and secure
• anywhere in the shop
• laying on their side
• none of the options are correct

When replacing or repairing welding tip, cutting attachment, or cutting tip:

• never employ over-sized wrenches when attaching cutting tip
• do not apply excessive pressure on crush nut with O-rings
• tighten welding tips and cutting attachment by hand only
• all of the options are correct

When you turn on the oxygen cylinder valve:

• never stand directly in front or behind the oxygen regulator
• never stand directly in front of the oxygen regulator
• never stand directly behind the oxygen regulator
• it doesn’t matter where you stand

Before you turn on main cylinder valves:

• make sure the regulator tension screw is loose
• set the regulator at the desired pressure
• replace the cylinder cap
• select the correct welding tip

The maximum amount that the acetylene main cylinder valve should be opened is:

• 1 to 1 1/2 turn
• 2 1/2 to 3 turns
• 4 1/2 to 5 turns
• all the way

You should make sure welding equipment especially the oxygen side is:

• lubricated with oil
• kept free of oil and grease
• cleaned with lacquer thinner
• painted
