MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

30 sec • 1 pt

Read the passage carefully and answer the question which come after it.

Just before dark, we took up our abode for the night at a small village, where I bought some food for myself and some corn for my horse at the moderate price of a button, and was told that I should see the river Niger early the next day. The lions here are numerous. The gates of the compound are shut a little after sunset, and no one is allowed to go out after this curfew. The thoughts of seeing the Niger in the morning and the buzzing of the mosquitoes, prevented me from sleeping until nearly dawn. I saddled my horse and was in readiness to start before any of my followers, but on account of wild beasts, we were obliged to wait until the villages were stirring and the gates opened, as this happened to be market-day at Sego, the roads leading to the village were crowded with vendors of merchandise. However, we drew along fairly rapidly in spite of a few halts on account of false alarms, and, after passing through some marshy land, we at last saw in the distance a silver strip.

Question: Why was the price of the food and corn 'moderate'?

It was only a little village, where things are cheaper than in a town.

Corn would be plentiful in such a district

The cost of it all was just a button, which is not a valuable thing.

It was a market-day

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

INSTRUCTION: Read the passage carefully, then answer the questions which come after it.

‘It was a very fine Wednesday morning in May. John and Kofi were on their way to school and as they walked along the sunlit through the forest, Kofi idly kicked a stone in front of him and listened to John grumbling about the troubles that would face them during the coming day.

‘I have Wednesdays,’ muttered John, slashing with a stick at the long grass which grew beside the road. ‘Half a morning to be spent doing nothing but Arithmetic! I shall never be able to do fractions and my sums never seem to come out right. I do wish it were Saturday!’

‘So do I,’ agreed Kofi sympathetically. ‘It’s always interesting on the farm and I never feel so sleepy there as I do sitting in class listening to Mr. Tannoh talking on and on about the Silent Trade. Who cares about History, anyway? I would much rather go fishing. That’s the best way to spend your time.’

‘Wait a minute!’ said John, stopping suddenly in his tracks and looking much more alert. ‘That’s good idea of yours. Why don’t we go fishing? If we go down that bush-path beyond the next mile-stone, we can be at the river-side in less than five minutes. We can dig up some worms for bait and make fishing-rods from branches quite easily.’

‘Ye-es,’ said Kofi doubtfully, ‘but what about school? We are late already and we still have a mile to walk. I hope you don’t want us to play truant. I can still remember the beating my uncle gave me last term when you persuaded me to go and pick mangoes with you instead of going to school.’

‘Oh, you are just a coward,’ said John scornfully. ‘Who cares about a beating? I’d rather have a beating any time than go and sit in class-room all day doing fractions. Anyway, no one will ever find out that we didn’t go to school.

‘That is just what you said last time,’ replied Kofi bad-temperedly, ‘but my uncle was waiting for me when I got home, and he knew all about it.

‘All right, then, if you are such a baby, I shall go fishing alone,’ said John, ‘but I shall tell everybody how frightened you are.’

By this time they had reached the bush- path and John began to walk down it, pretending that he did not care whether Kofi went with him or not. He knew his friend too well to believe that he would not follow; and sure enough, when he glanced over his shoulder, there was Kofi walking a few yards behind him.

It was very pleasant down by the river and the boys cut long sticks for themselves to use as fishing-rods. John, as usual, had plenty of string in his pockets for making lines and they used two bent pins for hooks. Kofi soon forgot his fears of the punishment awaiting him; and the two friends settled down happily to their fishing.

By ten o’clock they had still not caught anything at all. The sun had risen higher in the sky and it was beginning to be uncomfortably hot. ‘I am tired of fishing,’ said John suddenly. ‘I am going into the river for a swim.’

‘Oh, dear!’ said Kofi. ‘I don’t think you should. There are supposed to be crocodiles in this part of the river. You know that no one from the village ever comes here to wash their clothes or to take a bath.’

His words fell on deaf ears, for John had already pulled off his khaki shirt and vest and was preparing to dive into the deep brown waters of the river.

Why was John grumbling as the two boys were on their way to school?

They had to walk too far through the forest to school.

He was not looking forward to the work they would have to do at school.

Kofi was troubling too much.

It was not a pleasant morning for walking.
