Ruby Bridges

A judge ordered Ruby to attend a school for white children because

• it was against the law for black students and white students to have separate schools

• Ruby's test scores were higher than any other students in the area

• Ruby was a star athlete so she would bring fame to the school

• She was the only African American child in her town and there were no other schools

Ruby was all alone in the classroom with her teacher because

• the white people in her neighborhood kept their children home from school

• her teacher was also black and not allowed to teach white children

• she needed one on one attention to get caught up with the other students

• all the other children had the chicken pox and had to stay home

When Ruby was selected to go to an all-white school, her parents

• could not afford to buy her the books and uniform that she needed

• told the judge they refused to send Ruby

• prayed that Ruby would hold her head high and be a credit to the American people

• cried because Ruby would have to live with a white family
