Welding Safety

Why must we wear gloves when welding?

• Prevent burns

• to hold hot metal

• prevent cuts

• help with mobility

When lighting the torch what tool is used:

• match
• pocket lighter
• friction lighter
• flint

You must report any leaks of cylinders or connections immediately to the:

• custodian
• instructor
• maintenance department
• welder nearest you

Due to the heat from the open flame, point the welding torch:

• down and away from yourself
• away from all flammables
• away from other students
• all options are correct

When oxy-acetylene welding or cutting, the shade lens to be used is a:

• # 1-2
• # 5-6
• # 8-9
• # 11-12

Where are you more likely to have a potential fire hazard when using welding and cutting equipment:

• the gas welding area

• the production set up area

• the arc welding area

• those areas where portable equipment is being used

Cutting or welding should not be done where an open flame could be dangerous. Areas would include:

• in or near rooms containing flammable vapors and liquids
• where flammable liquids are stored or used
• in a room with high lint or flammable dust or exposed loose combustible materials
• all options are correct

If in doubt about any welding operation what should you do first?

• check with another student
• check reference materials in your notebook
• check with the instructor
• None of the options are correct

When welding torch backfires (pops and/or blows itself out), you should:

• close the oxygen needle valve first
• close the acetylene needle valve first
• drop the equipment and run
• inspect all the connections slowly and carefully

After you have finished welding and/or cutting, what should be done to turn off the entire system before you leave class?

• close the valves at the cylinders or manifold

• bleed the lines

• back off the regulator adjusting screws

• you must do all of the things listed to ensure the entire system is off
