Before, During, After Strategies

Before Reading the STAAR test I will complete the following strategies

• Make a prediction based on title, illustrations, and scan the story to look for names, settings, and other things that will help me understand what it will be about.

• Place my name on the answer document and that's it.

• Chunk paragraphs

• Read the story and go straight to questions

BEFORE reading the story I should probably...

• Look at the Genre decide if it's fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama

• Chunk my paragraphs (2 to 3 paragraphs)

• start reading without doing anything else, I don't need strategies, I want to get done so I can sleep

• Look at the questions, so that I can know what to look for when I read.

• Stop and jot means I will make a prediction for each paragraph

• Stop and jot means I will chunk paragraphs by putting two to three paragraphs together and drawing a line underneath as a stopping point.

• Stop and jot means I will write 5 words or less next to each chunked paragraph about what I read in the right-hand margin.

• I will only stop and jot WHILE I am reading the test
