What is the shaking and trembling that results from the movement of rock beneath Earth's surface?

Fault caused by compression forces that cause the hanging wall to slide up over the footwall.

The first wave to arrive at the seismic station; causes particles in rocks to move back and forth in the same direction as the wave is traveling; can go through solids, liquids and gasses.

The second wave to arrive at the seismic station; causing particles in rocks to move at right angles to the direction the wave is travelling; travels only through solids.
