Wuthering Heights Chapters 22-23

Ch. 22- Where is Cathy when she again encounters Heathcliff?

• At Thrushcross Grange taking care of Edgar. She see Heathcliff from the window and goes out to see what he wants.

• She is out on the moors and has fallen when Heathcliff comes riding up to her and takes her back to Thrushcrosss Grange.

• She has climbed over the wall that separates their property from the road. The door in the wall is locked and she cannot return to the other side. Heathcliff rides up to her and begins a conversation.

• She is trying to get a letter to Linton by talking to a farm hand and Heathcliff appears with a letter to her from Linton.

Ch. 22-What does Heathcliff say that makes Cathy cry?

• He says that her mother never loved her.

• He says that Linton is dying.

• He says that Hareton needs her help.

• He says that Nelly is leaving to live at Wuthering Heights.

Ch. 22- Why does Mrs. Dean accompany Cathy to Wuthering Heights when she knows it is wrong to do so?

• She cannot stand seeing Cathy upset, and she hopes seeing Linton will prove to Cathy that Heathcliff is lying about his condition.

• She has been threatened by Heathcliff and she does not want anything to upset Edgar any further.

• Heathcliff threatened to hurt Hareton if she does not bring Cathy to Wuthering Heights.

• She thinks it will help Cathy to see how cruel Heathcliff is and that it will end her crying.

Ch. 23- What do Linton and Cathy fight about when she visits Wuthering Heights?

• She is angry because Linton says that her father has never loved her. Linton is upset because Cathy tells him that the Linton family has disowned him.

• She is angry because Linton says that he does not like her and he never has. He is angry because she says that he is no smarter than Hareton.

• She is angry because Linton is especially cruel to Hareton and he is angry that she does not find it funny.

• She is angry because Linton says that her mother never loved her father and that she loved Heathcliff instead. Linton becomes upset when Cathy tells him that his mother left Heathcliff.

Ch. 23- Why does Cathy want to visit Linton again?

• Cathy thinks she can help him get well.

• Cathy wants to see Hareton.

• Cathy wants to see her mother's room.

• Cathy wants to talk Linton into moving to the Grange.

Ch. 23- What does Mrs. Dean say about Cathy's visits to Wuthering Heights?

• Mrs. Dean thinks that Cathy needs to visit Linton to help him in any way she can.

• Mrs. Dean insists that the visits must stop. If Cathy does not stop, she will tell Edgar.

• Mrs. Dean insists that the visits must stop or she will tell Heathcliff.

• Mrs. Dean insists that the visits continue to help Hareton with his work at the Heights.
