In-text references in academic work

When referencing we differentiate between a bibliography (at the end of your work) and

• reference

• in-text citation

What doesn't need to be referenced

• An article in an academic journal

• A graph I have seen on the Internet

• A concept discussed by my professor

• A fact which is generally know

Why do we need to reference?

• To distinguish our own idea from others

• To provide evidence and support to our own writing

• To give credit to other writers and researchers

• To show we understand commonly know facts

• To avoid plagiarism

Plagiarism is

• an academic offence

• is using someone else's work without acknowledgement

We use in-text citations

• When quoting directly from an article

• When using an image we have found on the Internet

• When paraphrasing

According to Dharmaraj (2020, p.23) “Helping students to stay motivated while learning remotely and without face-to-face support from the teacher or their peers can be challenging”

• is a summary of a main idea

• is a quote

• is a paraphrase
