How is lightning formed? (page 95)

• The hot air makes the water vapor turn back into water

  droplets or ice crystals. That forms a rain. Inside the rain, the droplets and crystals carry a tiny bit of electricity. The electricity builds until lightning suddenly forms.

How do you calculate how far away a storm is?

• You can't calculate the distance of lighting.

• To calculate how far away a storm is, wait for two lightning strikes to hit the ground and then count on 10 second, wait for the next strike divide the seconds that you waited for the second strike, by two. That will be how far in km the lighting is away from you.

• To calculate how far away a storm is, watch for lightning. Then count the seconds until you hear thunder. Next, divide the number of seconds by 5. This will tell you how many miles away the storm is
