I am not boasting when I say that I am one of the smartest mammals on earth. It's very true. Dolphins can talk to each other. We know our friends and family. We know how to play. We are good learners too.

Question 1: Can dolphins talk to each other?

My name is Dion and I am a 5-year-old Bottlenose dolphin. My family lives in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Southern Florida. I have relatives all over the world where there are warm ocean waters.

Question 2: Where do I live?

For the first three years of my life I stuck very close to my mother Dori. In the last few years I learned how to catch food and explore on my own.

Question 3: What have I learned in the past few years?

I will be fully grown by the time I am 9 or 10 years old. I have a lot of pounds to gain before I reach my adult weight of more than 400 pounds.

Question 4: What is the adult weight for dolphins?

If I'm one of the lucky ones, I'll live more than 25 years. Male dolphins don't live quite as long as females do. My great aunt, Nicklo lived up to 67 years. That's really old for a dolphin.

Question 5: How old is my great aunt?

My excellent eyesight and hearing help me find my way around the ocean. I always know where my family and close friends are. The twelve of us hang around together in a group called a "pod" or a "school". We keep in touch all the time. I know each one by their special whistle. It's like having a built-in phone number!
