Zoo Day

Ali and her cousin were excited to go to the zoo. It was Ali's birthday, and the girls had been waiting all week for this treat.

"Mom, is it time to go yet?" Ali called out.

"Just as soon as I finish packing up our lunches," Mom replied. "Ali, if you are all set to go, call Maria and tell her we'll be there soon."

Fifteen minutes later the girls were chatting happily on the crowded bus. It looked like everyone was headed to the zoo. They were carrying cameras and lunches and talking about the animals they would see.

Ali wanted to see the polar bear exhibit first. She had learned about polar bears in first grade, and they were still her favorite animal. She knew that wild polar bears lived in the Arctic, and she really wanted to see these huge animals swimming.

Maria said, "I can't wait to get there! First thing I want to see is the new baby elephant!"

Ali's feelings were a little hurt. It was her birthday; she should choose where to go first. Then she remembered that Maria was her cousin and best friend.

"Okay," she said. "As long as we get to the polar bears before lunch." The girls laughed just as the bus arrived at the zoo.
