The burning of fossil fuels has led to a build-up of carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere and a rise in global temperatures. Scientists refer to this phenomenon as global warming or climate change.

Many scientists wonder about the effects of climate change on Earth’s ecosystems. For example, how might an increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere affect plant growth? To find out, they did an experiment.

First, the scientists marked out several plots of trees. Within each plot, they placed a ring of vent pipes. The pipes in half of the rings released air with normal amounts of carbon dioxide. The pipes in the other half of the rings released air with more carbon dioxide.

Later, the scientists compared the growth of trees in each type of plot. What did the data show?

• Trees in the plots with increased carbon dioxide grew much more than trees in the other plots.

• Trees in the plots with increased carbon dioxide grew less than trees in other plots.
