Bridge to Terabithia chapter 11

Once Jess finds out what had happened to Leslie he

• starts to run and continues to run faster and faster thinking it would bring Leslie back.

• he goes to Terabithia and tries to find Leslie, he thinks he sees her in their treehouse.

• he goes to Terabithia looking for Leslie and finds out she now exists there as a spirit.

Jess worries that Leslie

• would go to he!! because she is not Christian.

• would have to move away after hitting her head.

• would never be able to see him again in Terabithia.

• can outrun and outswim him.

Jess's dad goes

• after him in his pickup truck.

• runs after him and finds him in Terabithia.

• mad and gets angry at Jess.

• tells Jess to get "his head out of the clouds".

Find the evidence that shows Jess has not accepted the reality of Leslie's death. That night Jess awakes and thinks:

• "Leslie could not die any more than he himself could die."

• "Jess finds Mrs. Edmunds and tells her that they should invite Leslie next time."

• May Belle almost falls off the tree that had fallen.

• Jess pushes May Belle down for wanting to join him, he says, "This is our place!"

Which one is true of Chapter 11:

• When he wakes up his first thought is that he has forgotten the milking, but when he gets to the kitchen he discovers that his father has done it. His mother is strangely gentle toward him, and she has made him pancakes.

• Easter is coming up, and Jess's family is starting to prepare excitedly. His family only goes to church on Easter, and when they do it is an event.

• It has been raining for a week, and Jess and Leslie are going stir crazy. Finally Jess suggests that they go to Terabithia anyway, and Leslie agrees.

The Big Idea or main idea of Chapter 11

• is to show us the anguish that Jess is going through with the loss of Leslie.

• is to show us that Leslie had died and is not coming back.

• is to show us that May Belle will be the next princess of Terabithia

With Leslie's death, there were also realizations that:

• Change Over Time: Jess's family with the exception of Brenda, is now treating him with empathy.

• Ethics: Jess's family thinks that it was a big deal that Leslie died but does not affect their family.

• Patterns: It was predictable that eventually the rope would break due to the fact that they kept swinging on it.

It is difficult to tell what Jess's emotions are since he is not really feeling them himself, but Paterson (the author) chooses certain details to suggest what he is feeling underneath the numbness. One such moment comes when Jess apologizes to Leslie in his mind for not inviting her to Washington with him. This is evidence of:

• Jess feeling sorry for himself.

• Jess feeling guilty that he did not invite Leslie which could have saved her.

• Jess feeling happy after his trip with Ms. Edmunds.

• Jess not sure how to feel after Leslie's death.

Had the rope not broken the day Jess took his trip
