Welding - Cause & Effect

If the electrode freezes to the work:

• Turn the welding machine off immediately
• Increase the amperage
• Change the ground terminal.
• Use the chipping hammer to knock the electrode free.

If the electrode is moved too fast when arc welding:

• Not enough metal will be deposited.
• A wide bead will result
• Excessive weld metal will be used.

A second pass should never be done if:

• The slag from the first pass has not been removed.
• The first was a poor weld.
• The joint was ground.
• The slag from the first pass has been removed.

What is the purpose of the coating on an electrode?

• Prevent impurities from entering the weld
• Protect the wire core.
• Prevent slag from entering the weld.
• Make the electrode look pretty.

Arc below is caused by:

• Magnetic forces
• Electrical forces.
• Metallic forces
• Magical forces

To stop arc below from occuring you should:

• Turn off the machine, remove the ground clamp momentarily then clamp it back on
• Switch to a different electrode
• Use a different pair of welding gloves.
• Have the arc welding machine prepared as soon as possible.
