                All aboard a bathyscaphe for the bottom of the ocean!

                Absolute darkness begins at 1300 feet down. A searchlight shows millions of small particles-living and dead. The living particles look like snowflakes, snowing upward, but the dead slowly settle toward the bottom. Shrimp flock to the light moths to a flame. Many strange creatures are seen. Some are shaped like eggs strung together; some are the size and shape of a football; some are hatchet-fish, their undersides glowing like torches. At a depth of 2000 to 2500 feet, long, slender, brilliant creature swim or stand on their heads or tails. In groups, they look like spears of growing asparagus.

                On one trip, the bathyscaphe came to rest on the edge of a cliff 6000 feet below surface. Nearby benthosaurus used three long fins as legs on which to stand. If the bathyscaphe went down deeper it might get caught under the cliff or be wedged between canyon walls, but over down it went. Nearly three miles down, a small shark with great globes for eyes came into view. Near-sounding echoes prove that the bottom of the sea was not far below.

John Carver. In preparation for next winter we are making a storehouse, building homes with hewn logs, and plating enough Indian corn to feed the whole colony. This is the place for a courageous man like you and for a master mechanic.
