The author uses this simile because the reader knows what a smile of shiny white teeth looks like, and can see how shiny the windows are on the train. By comparing the train to something the reader sees every single day, they are more likely to get that picture in their head of how the train looks to the author.

In accordance with the story, in paragraph 2, the narrator says, “I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.”

The text proves that the narrator was mentally insane because he chopped up the dead man’s body limb by limb, after he suffocated the old man to death with a mattress. This gruesome  murder only because he did not like the old man’s eye. Interestingly enough he placed the deceased old man’s corpse under the plank flooring in the old man’s room, otherwise known as the murder room.

According to the text, in paragraph 3, the narrator states, “ So you see he would have been a very profound old man, indeed, to suspect that every night, just at twelve, I looked in upon him while he slept.”

Exhibited by the story, the narrator shows the audience that he is mentally ill because he is performing stalker-like behavior towards the man. Usually when someone is stalking you, the narrator was not fond of murder.
