British Colonial America

I did not have enough money to pay my way to the New World. I agreed to work for a set period a time for a farmer in Virginia. I worked for seven years to pay for my passage and my freedom.

I worked all day while still taking care of my family. I fed the chickens, gathered the eggs, washed the clothes, watched after my children and made three hot meals a day. I was not allowed to vote or own property, even though I worked just as hard as the men did.

My skill allowed me to earn a living outside of farming. I settled in the New England colonies and lived very well. I was surrounded by many skilled craftsman, blacksmiths, butchers, and printers.

I owned hundreds of acres of land and eighty slaves. I lived in the Southern colonies. I would not be able to keep my plantation running if I did not own slaves.

I helped my father plant the crops, even though I am too small to hold the mule. I only went to school when we do not need to harvest our crops. I am the oldest of five. I watched my younger brothers and sister so they do not get hurt or get captured by Indians. I only knew life in Pennsylvania, because this is where I was born.
